Taiwan has a global reputation for spawning some the world's wickedest metal bands ever. The phenomenon is rooted in the 80's as popular hard rock, heavy metal and hair bands that seeped into Taiwanese youth culture during a time of slackening of martial law. This exposure to new, fast-paced and rebellious music fired up a generation of shred guitarists and metalhead fans that would go on to make numerous bands and influence a homegrown scene that has continued to the present. In the early 90's Assassin saw island-wide success for their innovative approach to heavy meta and party rock attitude. Several years later, the symphonic black metal orchestra Chthonic formed as a way to celebrate Taiwanese culture with songs that retell the island's mythology and past struggles. The dark ensemble made international headlines when they joined the Ozzfest tour in 2007. After a nu-metal phase during which more bands experimented with rapping and electronic samples, the scene has continued to thrive while testing more and more extreme forms touching on thrash, grind, hardcore punk and death metal.
