The indie music industry in Taiwan began in the 80's with Crystal Records which was started by a small group of underground zine writers hoping to spread interest in non-mainstream genres which they initially labeled "New Music." While Rock Records, another one of Taiwan's seminal record companies, began cashing in on more popular local artists, Crystal's New Music division Magic Stone released local indie bands like Ladybug, Feiwu and Sugar Plum Ferry. The following list of labels and record companies include those like Taiwan Colors Music and White Wabbit Records that were the first to successfully pioneer a market for underground music as well as newer DIY operations like Unwritten Homemade and RandomMind that are relatively small in scope. However influential they are, all of these efforts include prominent artists in the Taiwanese indie scene and deserve mention as part of its history.
