BROKEN LIFE FESTIVAL

The Broken Life Festival held in 1995 is both a footnote in Taiwan music history, and also a reminder of how out of control typically reserved Taiwanese audiences can potentially get. What was supposed to be an artsy international affair in Taipei turned into fetid chaos and ended in flames. Swedish collective Schimpfluch co-organized the event and Japanese noise group C.C.C.C. (a.k.a. Cosmic Coincidence Control Center) even released a live recording from the concert. Despite the apparent productivity, there are some pretty gross stories surrounding the night involving sewage, vomit and a notably violent appearance by Taiwan's own troublemakers LTK Commune which ended with gasoline poured on the stage and lit on fire. Needless to say, there hasn't been another festival quite like this since.
